Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
