Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a major awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait generations.
