Conservative reactions to the partial release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while others lamented how extensive redactions portray former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration representatives justified the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in American history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and image appear in portions of the materials, the widespread black blocks prompt significant questions about what may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately demanded greater openness.
“People are furious and disengaging,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and suggested that a future legislature may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this document release egregiously fails to comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Release
But, a segment of rightwing pundits and former President loyalists came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a justice department led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely censored, and many of the individuals depicted in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But some do not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed some rightwing voices to go on the offensive.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding those files for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide permanently. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was relatively muted following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for transparency that came before the congressional approval to pass a bill mandating the files' release.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were provided physical folders of files that contained little new data.
